Kunce Pleads ‘GUILTY’ to spectacularly out-of-touch attacks from the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC)

Back to News

Hawley’s allies at the NRSC charged Lucas Kunce with being a male cheerleader and a nerd who likes Magic: the Gathering. The “attack” came moments after Kunce’s record-breaking fundraising haul was made public.

Independence, MO – Yesterday, the Riverfront Times published Lucas Kunce’s record-breaking $1.1 million fundraising haul 2(4%). Then, moments later, Josh Hawley’s allies at the NRSC charged 13-year Marine veteran Lucas Kunce 8(16%) with being a “male cheerleader” and a “nerd” who “likes Magic the Gathering.”

Lucas Kunce answered the charges with one word: “Guilty!”

“We take these charges seriously,” said Connor Lounsbury, senior adviser to Kunce. “Lucas Kunce has pled guilty to being a male cheerleader at Yale and is a huge Magic the Gathering fan, a game he played with his fellow Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

The “attack” is currently the most viewed tweet on the NRSC’s account in 2023. Needless to say, Hawley’s allies at the NRSC were roasted online for what some have deemed weak charges…

Timing is everything.

The charges were levied moments after Kunce’s record-breaking fundraising went public.

Compared to Hawley’s first quarter of fundraising after he launched his Senate campaign in 2017, Kunce’s haul is over 35% larger. It’s also nearly 4 times more than Hawley’s latest quarterly haul reported to the FEC on January 31, 2023.

Kunce has built a truly grassroots movement — 97% of donors gave $200 or less. The average donation was $34. And not a single penny was raised from corporate PACs.

After Lucas set a record for his first week raise with a viral campaign launch video that has been viewed over 3 million times on Twitter alone, his grassroots fundraising continued at a record pace throughout the quarter as coverage and enthusiasm continued to grow around his candidacy.

The news of Kunce’s fundraising also follows a series of endorsements from Missouri labor unions, Social Security Works (in their first endorsement of a challenger this cycle), and Lt. Gov. Joe Maxwell, as well as a grassroots event featuring Andy Cohen and a rally at the famous Gates BBQ in Kansas City.
